Emergency and disaster situations (both naturally occurring and man-made) can occur at any time. The entire DePaul University community needs to be aware of how to respond in the event of an incident. This web page contains information pertaining to DePaul University’s Emergency Action Plan (EAP).
Questions and/or comments about the plan can be submitted to the Office of Risk Management and Environmental Health & Safety.

Emergency Evacuation Procedures
If you discover a fire…R.A.C.E.
Assemble with your group at least 300 feet away from the building at your pre-determined meeting place.
Conduct a head count and inform your emergency evacuation coordinator, professor or supervisor if anyone from your group is missing.
Wait for the “all clear” signal prior to re-entering the building. The signal will come from only the Fire Department, Police Department or Public Safety.
For other emergencies, such as severe weather or a tornado, or an earthquake, please see the Emergency Action Plan (EAP) for more information.
EVERYONE MUST EVACUATE IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY OR DRILL; FAILURE TO EVACUATE MAY RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH, AND MAY ALSO RESULT IN SUSPENSION, TERMINATION, FINES AND/OR IMPRISONMENT.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION PROCEDURE FOR:
Disabled Occupants
Anyone with a disability is encouraged to voluntarily inform his or her professor or supervisor of any special assistance needed in the event of an emergency evacuation. The professor or supervisor, along with input from Risk Management and Environmental Health & Safety, will discuss the situation with the disabled occupant. Click here Occupant Disability Questionnaire to download a form for voluntary identification of disability and required assistance.
The professor, supervisor or emergency evacuation coordinator will ensure that occupants with mobility impairments are assisted to a safe location in the event of an emergency evacuation.
Disabled occupants, who are otherwise capable of walking on their own, such as those people with hearing or vision impairments, should evacuate with the other occupants. It may be necessary to provide such occupants with an escort.
Disabled occupants who are dependent upon mechanical equipment for their mobility should not use an elevator unless authorized and directed by fire department personnel. Use of stairs is not feasible, and so these occupants should be escorted to a safe stairwell landing. Once outside the building, professors, supervisors or emergency evacuation coordinators should notify the arriving fire or police department personnel of the location of the disabled occupant and his or her escort. Fire and/or police department personnel will assist with their evacuation.
If a stairwell becomes filled with smoke or otherwise unsafe before the arrival of fire or police department personnel, then the disabled occupant and his or her escort should proceed to another safe stairwell or a room that is reasonably safe and has a telephone; call 911 and advise the dispatcher of the new location.
Evacuating a person up or down stairs while he or she is seated in a powered wheelchair should not be attempted. The battery is typically located in the back, which makes tilting the chair for ascending or descending stairs difficult.
