55 East Jackson Blvd.

EVACUATION PROCEDURE

All occupants of the 55 East Jackson Building of DePaul University are expected to be aware of the following:

  • two paths of egress from their area of occupancy leading to fire exit stairwells,
  • "areas of rescue" on their occupancy floors,
  • the sound of the fire alarm,
  • the evacuation procedures listed.
  • a Public Address System (PAS) is used during emergencies.
  1. Once notification for evacuation is received via the PAS, occupants should take only the most important items from their offices, (such as purses, attaché cases, coats), close all doors and proceed quietly to the nearest exit for evacuation. No time should be spent in saving files, turning off computers, collecting documents, filling papers, finishing phone calls, finishing lectures, completing exams, etc.

  2. If the problem is limited to just the alarm floor then evacuation is required on that floor, two (2) floors above and five (5) floors below the alarm floor. Elevators are not to be used during an evacuation.

It will be announced over the PAS, which floors need to be evacuated, for example:

    • occupants of the alarm floor should evacuate either three floors up or six floors down.
    • occupants of the two floors above the alarm floor should evacuate to the third floor above the problem floor.
    • occupants of the five floors below the alarm floor, should evacuate to the sixth floor below the alarm floor.
    • if the alarm floor is close to the top of the building and there are only one or two floors above the alarm floor, then all occupants should evacuate to the sixth floor below the alarm floor.
    • when exiting onto a safe floor, please remember to move away from stairwells and exits. If the floor is crowded, please continue to the next safe floor.
    • if complete evacuation of the building is necessary, an announcement to that affect will be made.

  3. All self-identified people with disabilities, employees with short term disabilities and visitors with disabilities, with their assistants, are to go to the designated areas of rescue. The assistants should inform the floor leads. The City emergency services will be made aware of the areas of rescue and check them to assist in the evacuation.

  4. Personnel will be on hand to direct and assist with the evacuation. All occupants need to stay calm, quiet and follow the directions that may be given verbally or through the PAS.

  5. Once the Fire Department or other City emergency services arrive, all occupants are to follow all of their directives. No one will be allowed to go back into the building or into any staircase until an "All Clear" is given by these agencies.

Information about area exits and posted "areas of rescue" can be found in the evacuation routes posted in all elevator lobbies.
